Re:Create Statement On Copyright Small Claims Provisions in Stimulus Bill

Washington, DC – Below is a statement from Re:Create Executive Director Joshua Lamel on the inclusion of copyright small claims court provisions added to the stimulus package released today:

“We oppose the last-minute inclusion of controversial copyright small claims provisions that would expose ordinary Americans to tens of thousands of dollars in damages, has significant constitutionality issues, and has advanced with almost no public debate in Congress. Though well intentioned, the provisions are based upon the CASE Act which has been challenged by a broad coalition for its potential to bankrupt Americans, and be used to target schools, libraries and religious institutions at a time when more of our lives are taking place online than ever before due to the COVID-19 pandemic.”
