Washington, D.C. – Following U.S. Rep. Issa (R-CA) and Rep. Ross (D-NC)’s re-introduction of the Protecting and Enhancing Public Access to Codes (PRO CODES) Act, Re:Create issued the following statement in opposition:
“The law is not subject to copyright, and for the sake of consumer safety as well as the public’s right to know, it is essential that technical standards remain freely accessible in the public domain,” said Re:Create Executive Director Brandon Butler.
“The PRO CODES Act has serious constitutional flaws and would restrict the public and first responders’ access to critical safety standards, obstruct commentary, criticism, and scholarship on the law, and hinder innovation and economic growth. As policymakers debate this ill-conceived legislation, Re:Create and its allies urge lawmakers to protect the public and reject this legislation that would put lives at risk.”
